Condition 1 | Basic status
In the basic status you can hear Max Bense’s slow relaxed breathing. Intensity of breathing is linked to the bridge parable. At rising areas in the parabel (1) breathing becomes a bit more intense. In gradient areas (2) breathing weakens.

The bridge-sounds give you the feeling like being on the Golden Gate Bridge. The way they are played is also linked to the bridge parable. Their loudness increases in rising areas (1) and decreases in gradient areas (2). Foghorns irregularly break this consistent sequence.

Bense's breathing is at the same speed like the visitors’ breathing. This causes a pacifying and relaxing effect on the visitor. Visitors achieve a well-balanced mood and harmonise with the object. By breathing at the same time a coexistence between visitor and object could begin. Also on this binding later emotions will be based on. The visitor will feel sympathy, antipathy, compassion or fear for the object.

Condition 2 | Discomfort
Condition 2 starts with an acceleration of breathing. Accelerated and intensed breathing-sounds cause an uncomfortable feeling. But you have no clue what will happen to you / with the object. It is unclear if a situation of imminence / pain / danger lies ahead. Breathings are irregularly interrupted by swallowing-sounds (--> swallowing caused by fear and insecurity). A light use of infrasonic suggests feelings of insecurity (--> what is happening?).

Condition 3 | Colic begins (max. 5sec)
Condiction 3 describes the moment right before renal colic begins. Breathing is very hectically and crampy. It sounds like the air has to be forced to leave his/its lunge. You can hear an infrasonic heartbeat. In this moment visitors realize that something “mighty” will happen. Rising infrasonic cause feelings of extreme discomfort (--> how loud will this become? = how painful will this be?)

Condition 4 | COLIC
Massive and powerful use of infrasonic defines the extreme painful situation of the object during condition 4. The increasing and decreasing infrasonics fill the room with their deep frequencies. Pricking sounds of an old dot matrix printer are amplified over the speakers. Breathing is no longer hearable. Any body perception is suppressed by colic agony. The hammering heartbeat (as infrasonic) suggests visitors being part of the colic – being right inside the pain.

In the momemt of colic visitors should be hardly confronted with other sounds. Your perception is primarily focused on (your own) pain. In the moment of pain anything else loses its meaning.

---

After ~10sec in condition 4 there’s a return to condition 3. Visitors now have the possibility to shortly rehabilitate and realize what just happened to them (--> what was this? Hopefully it won’t return!) But you’ll soon be overwhelmed by again increasing colic sounds (--> back to condition 4)

This cycle will be repeated three times until there’s a direct jump from contition 4 (colic) to condition 1 (basis status). By this sudden change the colic’s unpredictability is illustrated. Colics could return at any time and there’s no possibility to escape.
